Franco Foda set to QUIT after Scotland friendly as Austria boss hands in resignation

Austria boss Franco Foda has handed in his resignation with Wednesday’s friendly against Scotland in Vienna to be his final game in charge.

The 55-year-old has been at the helm for four years but came under mounting pressure following their failure to reach the World Cup.

Austria finished behind Scotland in their Qatar 2022 qualifying group with Steve Clarke’s men earning a huge win away from home after a Hampden draw.

They still reached the play-off through their Nations League campaign but lost to a Gareth Bale-inspired Welsh side in Cardiff.

And former Germany international Foda announced he will now quit after the friendly with only a couple of thousand home fans set to turn up for the game.

He said in a statement: “I take full responsibility for the team missing out on the World Cup. My coaching job will end with the Scotland game.

“It’s been a great four-and-a-half years, it’s been an honour to work with the team. My successor can look forward to a strong team.

“We were successful, albeit not with a happy ending. I’m looking forward to the last two training sessions and the lat game.”
