France edge Brazil blockbuster and five-star Sweden - what happened at Women's World Cup day 10

France secured a blockbuster 2-1 win over Brazil while Sweden put Italy to the sword on day 10 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Captain Wendie Renard was the late hero for France after they withstood a Brazilian fightback in the best game of the group stages so far.

Sweden ramped up their World Cup campaign with a 5-0 win over Italy with a sublime showing late in the first half.

And Jamaica made history with their first win at a World Cup with a 1-0 defeat of Panama.

It was billed as one of the games of the group stage and France’s clash with Brazil lived up to the hype.

Les Bleues took an early lead through their top goalscorer Eugénie Le Sommer, who notched her 90th goal for France.

Le Sommer, who spent two years away from the national team after falling out with previous head coach Corinne Diacre, met a Kadidiatou Diani nod-back to head home and put France in front.

Needing a goal, Brazil turned to Debinha who delighted in the first half before equalising in the second with another piece of skill. The forward controlled a through-ball with a flick before rifling the ball home to send the huge number of Brazilian fans in Brisbane into raptures.

With time running out, Renard delivered for France as she has done time and time again, benefitting from being left unmarked by Brazil.

The rangy defender ran round to meet a Selma Bacha corner at the far post to head home the winner and put France in pole position to top the group.

Sweden also confirmed their place in the knockout stages with an emphatic win over Italy in Wellington.

Le Azzurre had enjoyed much of the possession in the early passages of play but had nothing to show for it before Sweden took control in a 15-minute blitz either side of half-time.
