Fowler feels 'anxious' Nunez too eager to impress in early days of Liverpool career

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler feels Darwin Nunez needs to "calm down a little bit" in his bid to succeed at the club ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

After competing in the top two in recent seasons, including winning the league, the Reds have struggled this season and face a battle to even qualify for the Champions League.

Injuries have hurt Liverpool this campaign with focus on the impact of new signing Nunez who has in theory replaced Sadio Mane after his departure for Bayern Munich.

Injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have put even more importance on Nunez doing well at the club.

The Uruguayan has scored three league goals and netted in the win over Napoli in Europe in midweek with signs he is settling into the team in Anfield.

Fowler said: "With Nunez, and his goals have been brilliant and perhaps he could have had a few more, he is perhaps too anxious to impress. He just needs to calm down a little bit and then more goals will come.

"He has all the attributes he needs to be a top player, certainly under the tenureship of Jurgen, his staff, and all the fans. He knows he is in a good place and he will score goals for Liverpool.

"The fans are willing him to be at his very best because they know he's a good player. Okay, it’s been a bit stop-start after getting foolishly sent off and having a few aches and pains. The club have done what they needed to in terms of trying to get him up to speed. I know for a fact that he worked very, very hard in pre-season.
