Another Siya off to Durban: Sharks secure deal with promising Cheetahs flyhalf Masuku

Siya Masuku's move from the Cheetahs to the Sharks is a done deal, according to his agent, with the pivot signing a two-year deal with the Durban franchise.

The Sharks have been in need of a flyhalf to back up Curwin Bosch and Boeta Chamberlain, with the latter having to operate at fullback because of an injury to Aphelele Fassi.

The Sharks have been using the services of the experienced Lionel Cronje and Fred Zeilinga, especially in the Currie Cup where they've had their teething problems.

Masuku recently returned to action for the Cheetahs after recovering from injury, but his agent, Michael Thomas, confirmed that the 26-year-old has signed with the Sharks.

"Yes, he has signed a two-year deal, but when he'll start will probably be determined by the Cheetahs," Thomas said.

"He could either join the Sharks on 1 July or 1 November, depending on when he's released."

Masuku will join the Sharks as a pivot who can not only manage games as a playmaker, but also as an excellent goal-kicker, something he proved in the European Challenge Cup against Pau earlier this year.

The last-minute penalty he nabbed against Pau not only gave the Cheetahs a 9-6 win, but also allowed them to qualify for the EPCR Cup last 16, where their participation in the tournament ended.

Masuku will start at No 10 against the Sharks at the Free State Stadium on Friday afternoon.
