Four ups and two downs from Burnley's win over Shrewsbury Town

Burnley secured a spot in round three of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday.

A much-changed Clarets side got the job done against their League One opponents and although it was far from a vintage performance, it returned Vincent Kompany's side to winning ways for a first victory since the opening weekend. We take a look at the ups and downs from a successful Shropshire night.

Burnley returned to winning ways for the first time since the opening night of the season at Huddersfield.

That was almost a month ago and, particularly on the back of the weekend draw with Blackpool, finding a way to get a result felt crucial at Shrewsbury. It might have only been against League One opposition and it might not have been the best performance but hopefully it can breed confidence ahead of a return to Championship action at Wigan on Saturday.

Burnley had the game win twice on Saturday but couldn’t see out the contest. At Shrewsbury they managed the game far better. Granted Steve Cotterill’s side were limited in their attacking threat but the Clarets stood firm in the closing stages and played in the right areas to ensure they kept a clean sheet and secured the victory.

The winger made his first start the defeat at Leeds United in January and his first appearance of any kind since a late cameo at Arsenal later that same month. He came through 45 minutes unscathed and will hope his injury nightmare is now behind him. He played on the left, and volleyed a good chance over at the back post during a decent run out. His task now is convincing Kompany that he merits regular minutes in a side that has strength in depth out wide.
