Four senior stars send Manchester United U18s messages after FA Youth Cup glory

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are among several senior stars to congratulate Manchester United's Under-18s on winning the FA Youth Cup.

United's youngsters put on a great display on a special evening at Old Trafford to clinch the prestigious trophy as well as help lift the gloom that has engulfed the club this season. Cheered on by a sold-out crowd for the match, Travis Billion's side overcame a spirited Nottingham Forest to win 3-1.

Captain Rhys Bennett headed United ahead early on, but it was an evenly-matched first half and there could be little complaint when Josh Powell equalised for Forest — though keeper Radek Vitek didn't cover himself in glory. However, it would not be a disappointing night for the young Reds as the breakout star of the season, Alejandro Garnacho, once again made the difference.

The winger converted from the penalty spot — even though the foul on him to win it appeared to be outside of the box — to restore United's lead and he secured the victory in added time with a deflected goal. It means United have lifted the trophy for the first time since 2011 and the historic achievement hasn't gone unnoticed by the senior stars.

David de Gea and Eric Bailly were in attendance for the match, as were fellow youngsters (though too old to take part) Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez and the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. After the match, other first-team players took to social media to send their congratulations.

Captain Harry Maguire said: 'Brilliant lads,' accompanied by clapping emojis while vice skipper Fernandes wrote: 'Brilliant victory. Enjoy the moment," with a fire emoji.
