Erik ten Hag's ideal first Manchester United starting XI after dream transfer window

There is just shy of three months until Erik ten Hag will manage his first competitive game for Manchester United and that seems a minuscule amount of time to complete the task at hand.

United's squad is in a dreary state and in desperate need of yet another rebuild this summer. Given the club's inadequacy in the market in recent windows, it's difficult to see the 10 recruits that Ralf Rangnick recommended being made but at least half of that number will probably be required if Ten Hag is to make an instant impact at the club.

Though United's current squad is bloated and in need of trimming, the exodus they currently face once the season comes to an end swings too far in the opposite direction. Six players - Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant - will all leave upon the expiration of their contracts at a minimum.

But they're unlikely to be the only departures. The futures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Marcus Rashford are all in doubt, while Ten Hag may have even more names in mind to move on.

Though the returns of Van de Beek, James Garner and others from their loan spells could offset the losses if Ten Hag wants them in his plans, with well over 10 exits a real possibility quality and quantity will be needed in their signings.

A new midfielder or two is the priority but a centre-back, winger, striker and right-back may all be required as well for United to supply Ten Hag with a balanced squad that has the technical skills he will require.
