Four Leicester City players look to take advantage of duo's absence

Kasper Schmeichel has been afforded an extended holiday, Danny Ward has picked up an injury, and Eldin Jakupovic has been released. And so three weeks into pre-season, none of Leicester City’s three-man senior goalkeeping unit of the past four years have featured.

That means that Brendan Rodgers and his staff, including goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell, are being afforded a closer look at a few others who perhaps did not think they would be getting the opportunity they are. While Ward is at the camp in Evian, he has not been seen on the training pitch. Here’s a lowdown on the four goalkeepers who have.

One of the biggest decisions City will make over the next few weeks will be what happens with Iversen. A place in the squad, a loan move, or a permanent exit all feel plausible at this stage.

What is clear is that the Dane is extremely good. He won Preston’s player of the season in the Championship last year in yet another loan spell where he earned rave reviews. For some North End fans, Iversen topped even the ability shown by current England number one Jordan Pickford during his loan at Deepdale.

Like City’s other Danish goalkeeper, Iversen’s best attribute is his shot-stopping. He is absolutely the sort of keeper who will win his team points.

And so he’s likely too good to stay at City and be third-choice, but he may feel, and the club may feel, he can actually rise above either Ward or even Schmeichel, especially with the former’s injury and the latter’s uncertain future.

Equally, he will have a whole host of clubs interested in taking him, and many of those will be happy to pay. If City want some quick cash, he’s one they could sell. An interesting few weeks await.
