Four Irish crews make 'A' finals at World Cup event

Four Irish crews will race for A final medals on Sunday after a successful morning on Lago di Varese at the World Cup I event in Italy.

The men's double of Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch dominated their repechage, leading the race from start to finish. The Belfast and Clonmel rowers eased into their final with the quickest time and will go head to head once again with reigning world champions Stefan Broenink and Melvin Twellaar of the Netherlands.

Sanita Puspure is also in the mix for glory after progressing to the final of the women's single.

The top three crews from the A/B semi-final moved through; Puspure did what she had to do, finishing in second place behind the Norwegian sculler.

She'll be up against it on Sunday, as he takes on the likes of undefeated two-time world champion Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands and Germany's former Under-23 world champion Alexandra Foester.

The men's four of John Kearney, Andrew Sheehan, Jack Dorney and Ronan Byrne finished fourth in their repechage to make the B final.

In the men's pair Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan missed out on their A final by just over three seconds. They finished third behind Denmark and Italy and will now go in the B final early tomorrow against Sweden, Italy and two German crews.

Brian Colsh wrapped up his World Cup in the C final of the men's single. He leaves Italy having come 14th out of the 30 competitors.

Konan Pazzaia finished fourth in the A/B semi-final of the men's single which proved enough to send him through to the B final, where he'll go up against Portugal, Ukraine, Brazil, Spain and Switzerland.

On Friday, Fiona Murtagh and Aifric Keogh qualified for the women's pair A final, while the women's four crew of Emily Hegarty, Natalie Long, Eimear Lambe
