Formula 1: Mike Krack ready to manage 'demanding' & 'hungry' Fernando Alonso

Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack has offered his thoughts on working with Fernando Alonso from next year in Formula 1.

The Spaniard surprised many at the start of the summer break this year by revealing, only a day after saying nothing was imminent in terms of his future, that he would be leaving Alpine for Aston for 2023.

Indeed, he signed a contract that, depending on performance metrics being met by both him and the team, could last for three years, meaning Fernando is racing well into his 40s if all goes to plan, and it’s clear that his desire and passion for competing at the top table of motorsport remains undiminished.

Certainly, he evidently buys into the ambition that Aston are showing with their new factory being built and with new investment being pumped into the team, whilst team principal Mike Krack is a man who has a wealth of experience and is as equally as determined to win races and championships.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, then, Krack offered his thoughts on what working with Alonso might be like:

“It will be challenging for us. Normally, drivers with this experience, they do not have this desire to win … especially if they have won already.

“Fernando has this unique combination of speed, hunger, motivation and experience. For us, it makes him the perfect candidate. The downside could be that if the car we deliver is just not good enough, then we know it gets difficult.

“We think having someone like Fernando is really, really important to make the next step as a team.”
