Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton pushing for 'incredible' African Grand Prix before retirement

Lewis Hamilton says he is working hard to get a Formula 1 Grand Prix to be held in Africa before his eventual retirement from the sport.

The 7-time world champion has won a race on every continent that he has competed on, but we’ve not had a Grand Prix in Africa since 1993 at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa.

Indeed, it’s the one area of the globe that has been overlooked by F1 in its boom period, though there are hopes that a return to South Africa is firmly on the agenda in the coming seasons, though it’s not on the 2023 calendar.

As quoted in an interview with RaceFans, the Mercedes star revealed his hopes that he’ll be able to drive on the continent in a Grand Prix before he hangs up his crash helmet:

“We are on all the other continents, so why not?”

“We go to a lot of these places to highlight those countries and those communities there, so there was no reason why not to do that in Africa.

“I’ve been working as hard as I can with Stefano in the background to try and get that happening.

“It’s also a dream for me to have that before I stop racing – to have a race in Africa would be would be incredible.”

It’s been nearly 30 years since the last race was held in Africa and it seems only right that we get a Grand Prix on the continent in the near future.

Hamilton is evidently pushing hard for a return and Kyalami seems the most likely destination, with it expected to be back on the F1 calendar in the coming years.

The last installment of the South African Grand Prix was held in 1993 with Alain Prost taking victory for Williams, in a year where he’d win his fourth and final world title.

Jim Clark, meanwhile, has the most South African GP wins with four.
