Former Sheffield Wednesday favourite Keiren Westwood on lookout for new club after QPR confirm exit

Keiren Westwood is once again on the lookout for a new club after his short-term deal with QPR expired following their last game of the season. The former Sheffield Wednesday favourite joined the Hoops in March after their goalkeeping department was decimated by injuries.

He made six appearances for the Championship club as their early-season play-off push tailed off and reached a disappointing conclusion. A succession of injuries to key players in all positions massively derailed QPR’s campaign and left them with too much of a mountain to climb as they ultimately finished 11th.

Alongside Westwood, fellow goalkeeper David Marshall, Charlie Austin, Dom Ball, Dillon Barnes and Lee Wallace will all leave the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium for free this summer. In a statement, the club’s chief executive, Lee Hoos, addressed the departing players.

“David and Kieren came in during an unprecedented spate of injuries to our goalkeeping department, and they gave everything from the moment they arrived,” he said. “We would like to wish Charlie, Dom, Dillon, David, Lee and Kieren all the very best for the future."

At the age of 37, Westwood’s career is certainly in its latter stages and, until he signed for QPR in March, it wasn’t clear whether he would continue playing or not. His short spell in the capital may well have given him the appetite to carry on but it may have also affirmed a potential desire to hang up his gloves.

The media work he did briefly for Wednesday earlier this season could be a sign of what is to come in the next stage of the former Republic of Ireland international’s career.
