Former Rangers star sacked as Peterhead take action after Airdrie rout

Former Rangers defender David Robertson has been sacked as Peterhead boss after less than four months, and in the wake of Saturday's humiliating 7-0 defeat at Airdrie.

The Diamonds tore League One's bottom side apart at New Broomfield, racing into a 4-0 interval lead, adding a further three in the second half. Peterhead also lost 5-0 to Falkirk in their previous match, on March 4.

That leaves the Blue Toon bottom of the table, three points behind Clyde, who host Airdrie on Friday night, but with a goal-difference of minus-57, while the Bully Wee's is minus-30. Peterhead do have a game in hand, though.

A statement issued by the club yesterday confirmed that Robertson had been fired, with captain Ryan Strachan and Jordon Brown taking the role of joint-caretaker manager for their match home to third-placed Alloa.

It read: "Peterhead Football Club can confirm today we have parted company with first team manager David Robertson and his management team.

"Unfortunately results have been disappointing, and the club felt that a parting of the ways would be in the best interests of Peterhead FC.

"We would like like to go on record to thank David for his contribution to the club, and he leaves with our best wishes."

Robertson, who took over from Jim McInally in November, lost nine of his 12 games in charge, and brought in 11 players.

Chairman Rodger Morrison was far from happy with Robertson's performance, and told BBC Scotland he took action after people started asking difficult questions.

"David did sign 11 players in his short tenure here. I think it was quite obvious to most of our fans they weren't of the quality we were looking for.
