Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo slammed for ‘smoking’ on pitch

Former Manchester United centre-half Marcos Rojo has been blasted for appearing to smoke on the pitch in the presence of his young family after a cup final win with Boca Juniors.

The 32-year-old scored in his club’s 3-0 win over Tigre in the final of the Professional League Cup, which was created in memory of Diego Maradona. Argentine commentators were shocked when TV pictures panned to the 2014 World Cup finalist seemingly puffing on a cigarette during a post-game picnic.

Rojo had a tough time towards the back end of his stay at United. He was subjected to infrequent game time before ending his six-and-a-half year stay in February 2021.

He lifted the FA Cup, Europa League and League Cup while at Old Trafford but hadn’t played since November 2019 by the time of his exit. Some United fans were pleased to see the defender off their club’s wage books after years of inactivity.

Some on social media were not impressed by Rojo’s behaviour after the final whistle. A number shared their displeasure on Twitter.

@daddykoeler: Niiiice, smoking while there’s a child around.

@Hello_RadhikaJi: Smoking is injury to health.

@KurtThommo: And that’s the reason why he didn’t do too well at United. Lack of respect.

@Luk8YrselfIshan: Not cool.

@Karldinmanfor: Footballers smoking is such an own goal. Even worse to do it in front of a kid.
