Former Liverpool, Fulham, Millwall and current Cardiff City winger Sheyi Ojo linked with Gillingham; Neil Harris meanwhile leaves door open for Scott Malone as Championship sides take an interest

Gillingham have been linked with a winger over the weekend that played Premier League football for Liverpool.

Cardiff City’s Sheyi Ojo was a kid in demand while emerging from the youth ranks at MK Dons and it was the Reds who won the race for his signature, beating off competition from the likes of Chelsea and other teams in Europe for a winger that was an England youth international – reportedly paying £2m.

Ojo, 26, managed a handful of appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League and had loan moves into the Championship to play for the likes of Wolves, Fulham and Millwall. He’s also played in France for Reims and with Rangers in Scotland.

He played under Gills boss Neil Harris at Cardiff City and that’s where he remains but reports over the weekend suggest that he could be on the move this summer - with Priestfield a possible destination.

Harris has made it clear he wants a winger and Saturday’s game against Millwall showed they are still lacking some sparkle up top. Ojo could be one to light the place up.

Ojo made 40 appearances for Cardiff last season and even if he’s available, the Gills could still find wages a stumbling block for a player who has been at the top end of the game for a decade.

The Gills do still have plenty of scope for a loan deal, should that be an option, as all of their current players are on permanent contracts.

Harris, meanwhile, is leaving the door open for former Millwall player Scott Malone.

The left-sided 32-year-old has trained with the Gills since the start of pre-season and went with them on tour to Como. He wasn’t involved against Millwall at the weekend - a side who released him this summer - but was there at the game.
