Former Lions coach Van den Berg joins Welsh side Scarlets

Former Lions forwards coach Albert van den Berg has been picked up by struggling Welsh outfit the Scarlets.

The Llanelli-based franchise recently confirmed that the 49-year-old Van den Berg, who represented the Springboks 51 times between 1999 and 2007, will be joining them as a replacement for former All-Black prop Ben Franks.

Van den Berg is part of a backroom reshuffle by head coach and former Wales scrumhalf Dwayne Peel, with the South African joining former Ireland star Jared Payne as an assistant coach.

Van den Berg left the Lions at the end of the 2022/23 United Rugby Championship where they finished ninth on the log in a campaign that should have delivered more than it did.

He has joined a Scarlets side that had an even poorer campaign, with only six wins out of 18 games, a return that saw them finish 14th as the Welsh sides all failed to make the URC playoffs.
