Former Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith impresses on trial with goal for Middlesbrough
Ex-Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith scored in a friendly while on trial with Middlesbrough on Saturday. The right-back was released by Stoke City earlier this summer after three seasons with the Potters.
Smith spent seven seasons in West Yorkshire as a vital part of the promotion-winning side in2017 before featuring in both of the Terriers’ two campaigns in the top-flight - the defender made 200 appearances for Town in total.
The 30-year-old is now on trial at Boro under Chris Wilder and he started at right wing-back for their friendly against Bishop Auckland on Saturday, scoring the opener before being taken off at half-time.
An impressive 45 minutes for the Championship outfit could well earn a contract, with the veteran able to offer back-up for Isaiah Jones.
Smith and Boro will travel to Portugal next Saturday for a pre-season camp, giving the former Terrier more opportunity to impress, before a decision is set to be made before their Championship campaign kicks off with a home game against West Brom on Saturday, July 30.
