Former Hamilton and Morton striker names crucial factor in his football return at East Kilbride

Steven Boyd admits East Kilbride assistant boss Si Ferry was the crucial factor in him ending his football exile.

The 27-year-old had his contract at Championship side Morton mutually terminated in February after falling out of love with the game. But the former Hamilton Accies and Albion Rovers striker has made his return by joining the Lowland League champions on a deal until the end of the season.

And he has revealed he wouldn’t have pulled his boots back on for anyone else, after former Peterhead team-mate and coach Ferry told him he was too good to be out of the game.

Boyd, who scored the final goal in a 7-0 win over Stirling Uni on Saturday, told Lanarkshire Live Sport : “I wouldn’t have come back to football if it wasn’t for Si. I used to play with him at Peterhead and I really enjoyed his training so that was a big factor. He just said to me I’m too good to chuck it. I knew that anyway, but the chance to play football again and work with Si was a big thing.

“The way the East Kilbride team play is something I think I would enjoy so that’s why I decided to come back into football. I’ve heard good things about [East Kilbride boss] Mick Kennedy and the old kitman at Morton, Del [Derek Lothian], told me good things about him as well.

“Since I left Morton, I’ve been playing a lot of golf and that’s been it so I’m pleased to be back. I’ll need to give that up a bit now. My game has been getting worse anyway, the more I play, the worse I get.

“I made my debut last week [against Broomhill] and it was good to be involved. Once I get the fitness back in the legs that will be good. I’ve not played any football since I left Morton in February so I need a bit more training under my belt.”
