Former Gillingham player and managerial target Scott Lindsey has taken over as head coach at League Two side York City after Stuart Maynard's surprise sacking

Gillingham's League Two rivals York City have axed their promotion-winning manager and replaced him with a familiar face.

Just a day after announcing Stuart Maynard's shock departure, the Yorkshire club unveiled former Gills player and ex-Chatham Town boss Scott Lindsey as their new head coach.

Lindsey was most recently in charge of Crawley Town, ending his second spell there with the sack.

Maynard led York to promotion from the National League, winning the title with 108 points to end the club's decade-long stay outside the Football League. But just a few months after that success, he was surprisingly relieved of his duties due to a "difference in direction and vision".

On Sunday, York admitted in a statement announcing Maynard's departure that "this may look like a strange or difficult decision to understand", but said they believed the club would be "in a stronger position because of it".

His replacement, 54-year-old Lindsey, has often been linked with the Gillingham job thanks to his previous success in management and his local connections.

The son of former Gillingham defender Keith Lindsey, Scott made 12 appearances for the Gills during the 1994-95 season before going on to play for a number of Kent non-league clubs, including Dover, Sittingbourne, Gravesend, Folkestone Invicta and Maidstone United.

He has enjoyed mixed fortunes as a manager in the EFL, leading Crawley to promotion in 2024 before returning to the club and finding less success as they struggled towards the bottom of League Two, and was sacked after a run of 10 games without a win.

Lindsey has also managed Swindon Town and MK Dons, having previously enjoyed a successful spell in charge of Chatham Town.
