Foreign Office issues new travel alert for popular Mediterranean country loved by Brits
The Foreign Office has issued a fresh "stay aware" caution for Brits jetting off to Cyprus, prompting travellers to remain vigilant. Known for its stunning beaches and rich blend of Greek and Turkish cultural influences, Cyprus stands as the third-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, located near Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt.
The Foreign Office warned: "There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets." Travellers are therefore advised to "stay aware of your surroundings at all times".
As reported by Express.co.uk, further guidance from the Foreign Office notes that while Cyprus has been fortunate to have no recent instances of terrorism, it does not mean future attacks can be entirely dismissed. The advisory adds: "Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals."
It also points out that Israeli flights heading for Cyprus are being directed exclusively to Larnaca Airport for security reasons, although this has not impacted UK flights for the moment. Finally, it counsels tourists to steer clear of any sudden demonstrations or political events.
"Demonstrations may occur in cities with little or no notice," the Foreign Office says. "Events in the Middle East have led to heightened tensions and demonstrations are likely.
"Avoid any protests, political gatherings, or marches and leave the area if one develops. Local transport routes may be disrupted." On top of this, the Government body warns that crime against tourists is "not common" in Cyprus but you should still be cautious.
"Crime against tourists is not common but take sensible precautions,"
