Football is a game of mistakes, but we are growing - Chiefs defender Kwinika

Arthur Zwane's Kaizer Chiefs and their defence have left much to be desired early in the season, however it is a point they aim to rectify as they host AmaZulu in the DStv premiership on Saturday.

Indeed, Chiefs' defence has come under fire recently as they have been punished by repeated defensive mistakes with the latest one coming in the previous game against Stellenbosch in the MTN8 quarter-final where Njabulo Ncgobo was caught napping.

Next on Amakhosi's agenda is high-flying Usuthu at FNB Stadium on Saturday (17:30).

Chiefs have been in mixed form, sitting ninth in the table after only winning two out of the first five games in the league while Saturday's opponents sit third.

While defender Zitha Kwinika is taking the lapses in concentration in his stride, he admits there is much to brush up on in order to get their season firing. 

"I think I need to fix that [defence], it's not a problem, it's just mistakes. Football is a game of mistakes but now we are making mistakes that maybe cost us games but I think we are in a faze of building; we are learning, we are growing because we spoke about it and we're trying to fix it and we'll get better."

Even with the return of veteran keeper Itumeleng Khune, Kwinika does not feel that's the sole reason that the defence will suddenly improve.

Thinking back to Khune's heroics in their 4-3 MTN8 penalty victory over Stellenbosch at the weekend, the 28-year-old was measured in how it could have played out.

"It could've been Brendon (Peterson), it could have been anyone else in the poles. On a day of football, things happen but he did bring his experience and communication and I think that also played a role in the team."
