Flynn Downes makes Swansea City admission ahead of club’s showdown with Cardiff

Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes has admitted that he is determined to help the club make history in this weekend’s showdown with arch-rivals Cardiff City.

Remarkably, neither Swansea or Cardiff have ever managed to complete a league double in the south Wales derby.

The Jacks have the opportunity to achieve this particular landmark on Saturday when they travel to the Cardiff City Stadium.

Swansea swept aside their opponents earlier this season as they secured a 3-0 win in front of their supporters.

Goals from Jamie Paterson, Joel Piroe and Jake Bidwell allowed the Jacks to claim the bragging rights over Cardiff in October.

Since this fixture, Swansea and Cardiff have both struggled to make a great deal of progress in the Championship as they currently occupy 16th and 17th place in the league standings.

The Jacks will extend the gap between them and Steve Morison’s side to five points if they claim victory this weekend.

Ahead of this fixture, Downes has revealed that he is keen to help his side make history.

Speaking to Swansea’s official website, Downes said: “It is an incredible occasion, and it’s incredible to think that no-one has ever done the double.

“But that just tells you everything about the fixture and the rivalry.

“With all of the challenges we have had across the season, when the fans have stuck with us, to do the double would be very special.

“It’s a chance to make history, and you don’t get many opportunities to do that in a career.

“I’ll be honest and say I did not realise just how big it was until I moved down, and I loved my first experience of it earlier this season.

“Everything about it was spot on, the atmosphere, the build-up.

“So, I am looking forward to it, I can’t wait for it.”
