Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury 'almost entirely underwater' as flooding causes chaos across Greater Manchester

Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury is “almost entirely underwater” after the Mersey floodgates were opened on New Year’s Day.

The far end of Stenner Lane is completely submerged, with flood water reading the grounds of St James’ Church. Photos taken the M.E.N. show a stranded vehicle half submerged in water.

The end of Stenner Lane has been taped off to prevent access to the road. It’s not known if the residents of the cottages on the lane have been evacuated.

The River Mersey flood gates were opened this morning after heavy rains swept across Greater Manchester overnight. In a post on X, East Didsbury councillor Andrew Simcock said that this has impacted access to Fletcher Moss Park, Didsbury Sports Ground and Bradley Fold Allotments.

Heavy rains overnight resulted in flooding across Greater Manchester. Several major roads have been closed and in some areas emergency services have evacuated residents from their homes.

A major incident was declared by Greater Manchester Police earlier today, it said it was dealing with incidents in Bolton, Didsbury, Harpurhey, Stalybridge, Stockport and Wigan.

Chief Superintendent Colette Rose said: “Following events overnight a major incident has been declared. This is to ensure we can continue to keep people safe through a co-ordinated effort from our collective emergency services, supported by key partner agencies.

“Anyone affected should check the relevant detail being shared by their local council, the fire service and Transport for Greater Manchester to ensure they can get the support available, which include any road closures and information centres for those displaced. It is advised to travel if it is only necessary and to take care if out and about.
