Five school uniform hacks to help parents save money as kids return to school

With the countdown to September now truly underway, parents across the country are preparing for the annual hit to the household budget with the start of a new school year looming.

The cost of kitting out children in fresh uniforms isn't to be sniffed at, and this is no small matter, especially for families juggling more than one child's needs. And with the cost of living crisis ongoing, stretching the life of school attire has become even more of a priority for us all.

Parents who have vented their frustrations over spiralling costs on various social platforms will be pleased to know that help is at hand. Farah Mensah, a childrenswear guru from high-end brand Lallie London, has provided five vital tips to help economise on uniform as pupils brace themselves for the new term.

Farah began with guidance on laundry care: "I always recommend spot cleaning stains before putting items in the washing machine," noting it avoids the predicaments of stubborn stains. "This really helps prevent them from setting in and, whilst it might seem like an extra step, it can save you from having to treat stubborn stains later on. Make sure to stick to a gentle 30-degree wash to protect the fabric as hot water can cause colours to fade and damage delicate fibres."

She then explained the importance of reducing 'bobbling' to keep school uniforms looking fresh, stating that with fabric conditioner, "less is more". She elaborated: "Too much can cause bobbling, which not only looks unsightly on school jumpers but can actually weaken the fabric over time, meaning you'll have to replace it sooner."
