You can save money on fuel by filling up at specific time of day

Drivers could save on fuel costs by changing the time of day they fill up, according to car experts. The tip is among five shared by motoring experts at Carmoola ahead of next month's Budget.

There are fears drivers could be hit hard with an increase in fuel duty and a number of potential new fees aimed at closing the Government's Budget black hole. Aidan Rushby, founder and CEO of Carmoola, said: "With an anticipated fuel duty hike looming, we understand the added financial strain this could place on motorists.

“We’re sharing these practical tips - some well-known, others less so - to help drivers mitigate these costs. By incorporating these strategies into their routine, drivers can make a noticeable difference in their fuel expenses over time.

Refuel early in the morning or late at night

Fuel expands when it’s warm, so you get slightly less for your money when you fill up during the heat of the day. By refuelling in the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late at night, the fuel is denser, meaning you technically get more for your money.

Use fuel loyalty programs and cashback credit cards

Many petrol stations and supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s (Nectar Card) and Tesco (Clubcard) now offer loyalty programs that can give you points or discounts on fuel. Similarly, certain credit cards offer cashback on fuel purchases. By combining these, you can effectively reduce the cost of your fuel. For example, using a loyalty card at a Shell station might give you points that convert to money off your next fill-up.
