Three men arrested on suspicion of murder after 'beloved' dad is killed in 'arson attack' on his home

Two more suspects were arrested on suspicion of murder after a 'beloved' and 'larger than life' dad was killed in a suspected arson attack on his home.

Mark Vernal, aged in his 40s, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries following the fire at the property on Dumbarton Green in Wigan on on August 14.

Police said he became 'trapped' inside the burning property. He later died in hospital and a murder investigation was launched by detectives.

Crime Scene Investigation teams remained at the house throughout the week after the suspected arson attack conducting investigations.

Three suspects have since been arrested on suspicion of murder. A 48-year-old man who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder and section 18 assault has been released pending further enquiries.

A second man, aged 45, who was also arrested on suspicion of murder, he has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

And on Tuesday (August 20), a third man, aged 27, was also arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody ahead of being questioned by detectives in the Major Incident Team.

Previously, the Manchester Evening News reported that Mark's family had set up a fundraising page to help pay for his funeral, where he was fondly described as a 'larger than life' man with a 'heart of gold'.

In a new tribute, Mark’s family, said: “He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend. Mark was taken in such tragic circumstances.

“He was a larger than life character and loved by many. Our hearts are broken beyond belief at the saddest of times and how cruelly Mark has been taken from our lives.
