First major crash rocks bobsleigh field as Aussie two-woman pair finishes 16th

Australian bobsleigh team Bree Walker and Kiara Reddingius have finished 16th in the two-woman event at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The pair got off to a slow start in the 20-team competition on Friday, recording the 15th best time in the first runs before jumping up to 12th overall after the second.

A top-10 position was in reach after a strong run in the third heat on Saturday night but the team recorded the slowest run of all competitors in the final heat.

Walker and Reddingius were gunning for a record result by an Australian team, with two-woman efforts at Turin 2006 and Sochi 2014 both finishing 14th.

“I guess I just wanted it too much and that’s why mistakes were made,” Walker told Channel 7 of her slow last run.

The result caps off what was nonetheless an impressive sliding program for the green and gold after skeleton racer Jackie Narracott took home silver and Walker finished fifth in her stronger monobob event.

Monobob places a higher emphasis on individual skill, with competitors using the same equipment and the influence of team resources reduced.

“I don’t have words. I don’t have emotions, it’s been a huge campaign but I’m so grateful for our team,” Walker said.

“We’ve worked really hard. I’m disappointed with my last run especially but I couldn’t have done these results without my team.”

Reddingius praised Walker for “willing to risk it” and “chucking herself out there” in the final run.

“I’m really proud of how we did this whole campaign. First Olympics, fourth race together,” she said.
