Fiorentina make brutal David de Gea decision after Manchester United icon's nightmare debut

Fiorentina have made a major decision over David de Gea after the former Manchester United star's return to football.

De Gea left United in 2023 after 12 years as the club's first-choice goalkeeper. The Spaniard made 545 appearances for the Reds, winning major trophies along the way.

United decided to allow De Gea to leave the club as a free agent last summer, replacing him with Andre Onana as their new goalkeeper. De Gea went more than a year without signing for a new club following his departure from Old Trafford.

It was confirmed earlier this month that De Gea had signed a one-year contract with Fiorentina with the option of a further year. However, it seems that the United legend's time with the Serie A club is not going fully to plan.

De Gea made his debut for Fiorentina in their Europa Conference League qualifying fixture against Puskas Akademia. The 33-year-old conceded two goals, including a penalty, in the early minutes of the game as the Italian club were held to a 3-3 draw in a match they were deemed to be strong favourites.

Days after that stalemate, Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino opted to drop De Gea to the bench for the club's next match. Sunday saw the club face Venezia in Serie A, with Pietro Terracciano selected between the posts ahead of De Gea, who was among the substitutes.

It remains to be seen if De Gea will get another opportunity to show why he is still capable of being a No.1 goalkeeper. Thursday night will see Fiorentina face Puskas Akademia away from home in the second leg of their Europa Conference League
