Finishing touches put on new cycle lanes and road layouts on Deansgate

Segregated cycle lanes and new road layouts are starting to come together on one of the Manchester's busiest roads. Work has been progressing fast over recent weeks to change Deansgate so that there is more room for cyclists.

It is part of the council's plan to make better walking and cycling routes across the city centre, with segregated cycles lanes, one-way streets, and wider pavements.. In the council's City Centre Transport Strategy, they aim for 90 per cent of all morning peak trips to the city centre to be made on foot, by cycle or using public transport by 2040.

After months of consultations, the latest part of this development is close to being completed. Cyclists and buses could already be seen taking advantage of the deducted routes on Thursday (August 11), with the stretch from Blackfriars to King Street West all but finished.

There is now one cycle lane for two-way traffic and temporary bollards put up during Covid have been replaced with taller wands to separate the cyclists from other road users. Only cars and taxis are now allowed to drive through this section of road too, and it is one-way heading south from Blackfriars to King Street West.

There is a bus gate at the junction of Blackfriars Street and Deansgate for southbound buses, taxis and bicycles, and for loading between 6am and 10.30am. The bus gate will be enforced by cameras.

Many more changes to Deansgate are also set to be completed soon. This includes a bus gate on Bridge Street after its junction at Left Bank which will mean only buses, cycles and taxis will be able to drive out of the city centre across the River Irwell into Salford via this route.
