FIFA 23: How to score free-kicks

It is fair to say that FIFA 23, the final instalment of the franchise, has had a mixed reception.

While critics wrote mainly positive reviews, averaging 77, the game was savaged by users on Metacritic after the opening weekend, averaging a score of just 2.3.

Many were complaining that the games appeared to be scripted, while presentation, gameplay and difficulty levels also came under fire.

Over the last week there have been many comments and videos on social media talking about free-kicks. Many videos are claiming to be tutorials on free-kick technique, with some proclaiming that “free-kicks have never been so easy.”

The system for free-kicks has changed. As opposed to the old system, where you would aim a singular circle to a spot and then add spin in the run-up, the new system is based around a predictive line, and lets you be far more specific with your spin type.

Reviews show that for a standard curler with the inside of the foot, raising the line slightly above the default setting and using between two-and-a-half and three on the power bar is a consistently successful formula. Especially when you hit the shoot button again as the player is about to make contact, to improve accuracy.

However, one post on Twitter in particular focuses on using the outside of the foot. One user replying to this post states that they always use the outside of the foot for free-kicks on FIFA 23.

Many see this as a positive step within the game. Axel Metz on Techraider describes FIFA 23 as putting “the threat back into free-kicks and corners.”
