FIFA 22: Diego Maradona ICON cards reportedly to be removed

It has come to the attention of FIFA players around the world that Argentine legend Diego Maradona will be stripped from FIFA 22 because of legal reasons.

He had previously featured in EA Sports’ FIFA gaming franchise as a high-rated FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) ICON, but following his unfortunate passing in 2020, Maradona’s rights have become an ongoing legal battle and have risked his involvement with EA and more specifically FIFA.

Regarded as one of the best players in FUT, his suspension from the game is a controversial decision that has both football and FIFA fans talking.

Maradona was the first ICON to be included on the FUT back on FIFA 18, alongside other footballing legends Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and Lev Yashin.

ICON cards had become a replacement for FUT Legends and now have three separate items that represent the rating and many attributes over three different periods of a player’s career.

According to FutSheriff on Twitter, EA suspended the late footballer’s items from FIFA 22 following a “third party legal dispute,” which we can only assume can be linked to Maradona’s estate.

All three of his ICON items have immediately been removed from Packs, Squad Building Challenges and Drafts. If, however, Maradona is already part of your club, you should be able to continue using him.

Where the news is very recent and sudden, it is not known whether this change will be permanent or just happen on a temporary basis. I think it is safe to say that these items will not be available until the legal dispute comes to an end.

This obviously poses a question for many users of the game of whether El Pelusa will be available in FIFA 23?
