FFP rule change, 115 charges impact, Man United battle - Final Man City court case verdict

Manchester City have won a huge battle against the Premier League after an independent panel deemed both current and original Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules to be unlawful.

City, who claimed the rules to be discriminatory and bad for business, brought the unprecedented challenge to the league. The Blues argued that the Premier League's political motivations for bringing the rules in clouded them to the reality that it was a poor decision commercially.

An arbitration hearing was held in front of an independent panel but behind closed doors for both sides to put across their arguments. After two weeks of debate, the verdict was known and released. The tribunal decided that the Premier League rules breached competition law and are therefore legally void.

It also found that the Premier League was specifically unfair in how it had applied the rules to City. The club will now be entitled to seek damages from the Premier League as a result of the decision, which was reached by a former Supreme Court Justice, a former Judge of the European Court of Justice, and a former High Court Judge.

Nine Premier League clubs showed their support towards the Premier League by giving evidence that supported the league's position. Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham, Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham and Wolves backed the top-flight.
