Fernando Torres: Remembering his incredible goal for Liverpool vs Sunderland

It’s easy to forget Fernando Torres was once one of the best strikers in world football – if not THE best.

Of course, we’re talking about his spell at Liverpool where, in his first three seasons at Anfield, he scored 56 goals in 79 Premier League appearances.

At the same time, Torres was scoring the only goal in the Euro 2008 final to help Spain triumph over Germany.

But it was during the 2009/10 season where Torres was almost unstoppable despite suffering from injuries. Liverpool finished seventh that season and the Spaniard only played 22 times in the Premier League but he scored 18 times.

And we think we’ve discovered the best of those 18 goals during the 09/10 season.

It actually came on this day (28th March) back in 2010.

And it was so good that the Liverpool TV commentator was convinced it took a deflection. Instead, it was just pure magic.

Torres picked up the ball on the left wing and faced defender Michael Turner. He backed him into the penalty area before cutting onto his right foot. Another Sunderland player closed down Torres before the striker curled the ball delightfully right into the top corner past Craig Gordon.

Was it a cross? Was it deflected?

The Liverpool commentator thought the latter, while Martin Tyler on Sky Sports was also caught out.
