Fernando Alonso talks up prospect of podium finishes in second half of year

Fernando Alonso says he is feeling positive about the chances of scoring big points in the second half of the season and also potentially challenging for podium places in the Alpine.

The Spaniard has had quite a lot of bad luck this year and that has stopped him from accruing the number of championship points he should perhaps have at this point of the season.

We’re at the midway point of the campaign, though, with eleven races to go in 2022, and it seems like a good time to take stock of what has happened so far and what might be to come in the months ahead.

Alonso is hoping that there are chances for podiums lying in wait in the future, too, with him telling the press here in France on Thursday:

“Obviously, we need some help from the top three teams in front of us but we already see one or two retirements from them. We saw in Austria that Checo had a problem. Few races ago, Carlos had a problem and Checo as well. So there is always that possibility of top five, top six available. And as we saw in Silverstone in the last couple of laps, anything that happened in front of you, the podium is just there. So yeah, I’m feeling positive.

“The second part of the season is quite optimistic from our point of view in terms of performance. And if we deliver some clean weekends, we will score big points. That’s the aim.”

Without any reliability issues or misfortune, Alonso would be a lot higher in the standings.

When things have gone right for him, he’s still delivered some big results as well, both in qualifying and, of course, the races.

He remains on top of his game, and will hope that the second half of the season is going to be a bit kinder on him luck-wise.
