Fernando Alonso has said there wasn't much wrong with F1's Abu Dhabi finale

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso says that he didn’t think there was anything wrong with the way the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix finished as Max Verstappen took the championship away from Lewis Hamilton on the final lap.

The 2022 season is fast-approaching but the ghost of 2021 still lingers, though the FIA has taken steps to start moving on with Michael Masi removed as Race Director for his adjudged part in proceedings at the Yas Marina circuit.

Indeed, new FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem revealed that, as well as that, a virtual race control room would be set up to support the Race Director, with that position itself rotating between Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittich over the course of the campaign.

Looking back on Abu Dhabi and reflecting on the decisions made since by Ben Sulayem, though, Alonso said that he felt there wasn’t too much wrong with the final lap of the 2021 campaign.

“I mean… the new president obviously wanted to make sure that everything was in place, as I said also a couple of times I like Mohammed, I like the approach he has,” he said at the Alpine A522 launch.

“So if he thinks that we needed some new ideas there, it’s for the good for everyone, so I’m happy with that.

“On the whole theme of Abu Dhabi, maybe I have a different opinion, I don’t think that there was anything wrong there.

“I don’t think that they changed it [the race control structure] because of Abu Dhabi, or I hope not.”

An interesting take from Alonso, and we just have to hope we don’t see similar future levels of controversy around the sport after an unfortunate end to what was a gripping 2021 season.
