Ferdinand aware Man Utd are in ‘terrible situation’ as stars ‘downed tools’ against Brighton

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United’s players as he believes they “downed tools” in the defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Red Devils travelled to face Brighton on Saturday evening. This campaign has been an awful one for United and it hit a new low on the south coast.

The Seagulls smashed four past their Premier League rivals to win 4-0. Moises Caicedo netted from outside the penalty area before the break.

Brighton added three more goals inside eleven minutes in the second half. Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard got on the scoresheet.

Man Utd can now finish no higher than sixth and they could potentially be overtaken by West Ham and Wolves before the season ends.

Speaking after the loss to Brighton, Ferdinand claimed that United’s current players have “no fight”:

“It has got to the stage where you can’t even put up a fight as a Man United fan. We are getting mocked every week,” Ferdinand said on his Five podcast.

“We gone down to Brighton to the seaside for a day out. We got pumped and sent back home.

“There is no fight, there is no character and it seems there is no desire. People have downed tools it seems.”

He added: “We are getting smashed 4-0 at Brighton. Listen, they are a decent team, but United shouldn’t be getting beat 4-0 like that. This is a terrible situation and I really wonder what it is like in that changing room.

“Is there anyone standing up? Are there any characters that are picking people up or is everyone in there thinking that it has gone now? We have gone and that is it.”
