Fashion Sakala battles ex Celtic strike target as former Rangers man in battle to rip up the record books

Former Rangers star Fashion Sakala is striking up a prolific all-African strike pairing with an ex Celtic target who are closing in on making history at their Saudi Pro League club at Al Fayha this season.

The Zambian has struck up a formidable partnership with Nigerian Henry Onyekuru who turned down the Hoops six years ago to sign for English Premier League outfit Everton in a £7million deal. The pair swapped Europe for the Middle East last summer with Sakala ending his two-year stint at Ibrox and Onyekuru swapping Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor for Turkey.

Sakala, who joined Rangers from Belgian side Oostende when Steven Gerrard was in charge, has settled in superbly at Al Fayha and has played in all 24 games for Serbian Vuk Rasovic’s side with 10 goals and four assists to his name. And on the occasions when Sakala fails to find the net, they can always rely on Onyekuru who, also 27, is just a few months the ex Ibrox strike star’s junior which has helped to fire them to eighth place in the league. Onyekuru failed to make an impact at Goodison Park and moved out on loan to Galatasaray where he helped them to a double. He later moved to Monaco but that didn’t work out and he switched to Olympiacos in Greece before returning to Turkey.

Now in the Saudi Pro League, he is standing out - and not just because of his bleached-blonde hair - and has 10 goals for Al Fayha, the same a Sakala.

That has led to an intriguing battle between the pair as they look to break the club record of 13 goals in a Saudi Pro League season, set by Chilean Ronnie Fernandez during the 2017-18 season.
