Farewell Gorbachev, Ukraine's nuclear plant, UN Xinjiang report, Pakistan floods

When the war in Ukraine began, Vladimir Putin issued veiled threats of tactical nukes if the West got involved. Now the whole world is fretting over the risk of a nuclear accident, what with Europe's largest nuclear power plant on the front line of fighting. The worries persist, despite the Russians and Ukrainians allowing a team of UN inspectors to cross the Dnipro River and visit the Russian-controlled, Ukrainian-operated plant.

The UN secretary general will be in the spotlight next week when Antonio Guterres travels to Pakistan for a first-hand look at the unprecedented monsoon flooding. The rains have stopped, but the waters coming down from the Himalayas are still rising in the Indus Valley plains of the south. Twelve hundred dead and counting, countless homeless, one third of the country affected and a deluge of water compounded by rapidly melting glaciers. When FRANCE 24 went to the northwestern town of Nowshera at the start of the week, our team witnessed chaotic scenes during food distribution. Pakistan set up a National Disaster Management Authority after the deadly floods of 2010, but the current cataclysm is clearly too much.
