Falkirk slam homophobic chants during Hibs clash as club call out fans in scathing statement

Falkirk have condemned homophobic chants from fans during Tuesday's Premier Sports Cup win over Hibs. The League One club hit out at a section of their supporters who used discriminatory slurs and promised to apologise to the Easter Road club.

John McGlynn 's side turned in a terrific display to defeat their Premiership opponents at the Falkirk Stadium but club chiefs were left dismayed by abuse directed at the travelling supporters from individuals in the home end. The chants were highlighted on social media in midweek and Falkirk have now made a formal statement. They insisted the chants will not be tolerated and demanded they not be repeated.

A club statement said: "The club has been reflecting on the fantastic performance on Tuesday evening against premier league opposition. It is important to recognise the fans’ contribution in that victory, the first time in many seasons that we have had a real gutsy performance to cheer on.

"We are disappointed that it was marred by homophobic chants, directed at the Hibs fans by some of our supporters. This is unacceptable conduct and cannot be tolerated in a club that endeavours to be representative of its local community.

"The club recognises that individual fans have called out on social for this behaviour to stop and we would like to add our voice to theirs, as it is only by working together that the club and fans can eliminate this behaviour and make The Falkirk Stadium a more welcoming and inclusive venue for everyone.

"The club will be making a formal apology to Hibernian Football Club and their fans."
