Fabrizio Romano drops update on Tottenham signing another centre-back after Lenglet

Tottenham could still try and sign another centre-back after Clement Lenglet‘s arrival, believes transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman is closing in on a loan move to Hotspur Way, but Romano has not ruled out Antonio Conte recruiting an additional central defender if the right opportunity presents itself.

According to multiple reports, Lenglet is set to join Spurs on a temporary deal.

Last week, The Athletic stated that Tottenham were close to signing the 27-year-old on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Should Lenglet arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he would be the north London club’s fifth summer addition.

The transfer window has not even been open for a whole month yet, but Spurs have already brought in Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster to improve the depth of Conte’s squad.

Romano can still see Tottenham signing another centre-back after Lenglet if the right player becomes available.

Speaking about the possibility of Conte strengthening his central defence even further, the journalist said to GMS: “I think it depends on the opportunities. Lenglet, it’s a loan deal, so it’s a smart deal for Tottenham because they’re not spending crazy money on the centre-back, on a player who has good experience. Conte wanted him, so he’s a smart deal for Tottenham.”

It is quite clear that Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol were above Lenglet on Conte’s list of left-sided centre-halves.

In May, Football Insider reported that both players were two of Conte’s top three targets to address the left side of his central defence.
