FA Trophy quarter-final draw: Sittingbourne to face Aldershot Town after beating Southend United
Sittingbourne have discovered their FA Trophy quarter-final opponents following the weekend heroics at Southend.
The Brickies will play Aldershot Town on Saturday, March 1, with the tie worth £7,500 to the winners, while the losers receive £2,000.
Sittingbourne reached the last eight with a stunning 1-0 upset victory at Southend on Saturday, courtesy of debutant Anthony Church’s injury-time strike.
It was the Brickies’ eighth game in this season’s competition, including qualifying rounds, and their sixth victory over higher-division opposition.
They’re only two rounds away from a Wembley final – unthinkable for a Step 4 club.
Few gave them a chance of bridging a three-division gap at Roots Hall but Ryan Maxwell’s Isthmian South East side upset the odds in dramatic fashion.
“I’m just incredibly proud,” said Maxwell, speaking shortly after the full-time whistle.
“I’m proud of the players, proud of everybody. I’m happy for everybody, I love everyone at the club.
“It’s like an extension of my family. We’re so close here, we’re unbelievably close, and I just wanted us to do it for other people.
“I think that gives us more drive and fight when you’re doing something for someone else.”
