FA set to announce its intention to bid to host Euro 2028

The Football Association are set to confirm their decision to focus on a bid to host Euro 2028 instead of World Cup 2030 today.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on October 16 that the bid to host a home nations World Cup in eight years time would be rejected by UEFA.

But European football’s governing body has offered the English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish encouragement that a bid to host Euro 2028 would have more chance of success.

And a media briefing has been called for Monday morning where the move to the European Championships is set to be confirmed.

The previous edition of the tournament, Euro 2020, was held in 11 host cities across Europe to mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament.

The format will return to normal for 2024 with Germany set to play hosts.

Wembley played an extensive role during the tournament played last year but the last time England was the sole host was in 1996.

In both 2021 and 1996, England suffered penalty heartbreak as they were knocked out by Italy and Germany respectively.
