FA issues statement after 'tragedy chanting' during Manchester United and Liverpool match

The FA has issued a public statement amid reports of 'tragedy chanting' during the Manchester United and Liverpool game on Sunday (March 17).

The Football Association said it is working with Greater Manchester Police following the incident, and that it 'strongly condemns' any 'offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants' at stadiums.

A statement from the FA said: "We are aware of the reported tragedy chanting during today's FA Cup fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool, and we will be liaising with and supporting Greater Manchester Police.

"We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants in football stadiums, and we are determined to stamp this behaviour out.

"It is entirely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game. It must stop, and we support any club and their fans who try to eradicate this from the terraces."

Manchester United produced a 4-3 extra-time comeback victory over Liverpool in their FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Sunday (March 17).

Before the game, a huge police presence had been pictured close to the stadium, with swathes of police moving down Ordsall Lane, in Salford. GMP later confirmed that officers and Tactical Aid Unit officers were in attendance to escort fans walking to the stadium.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for more details.
