F1: Lando Norris makes prediction over challenging for regular race victories

Lando Norris has said he hopes to be fighting for Formula 1 victories with McLaren from 2024 onwards.

The British driver is yet to taste victory in F1 but has come close, with him almost winning the Russian Grand Prix last season before a late downpour ruined his chances.

Of course, the main reason behind him not normally being in race-winning contention is that the McLaren hasn’t been quick enough to regularly challenge, and this season has again seen the team away from where they ultimately want to be.

During his time with the team, though, Norris has underlined the fact he is one of the brightest drivers on the grid with some stellar performances and it's surely the case that when the car is quick enough, he will be standing on the top step on more than one occasion.

He has suggested that it might not be until 2024 or 2025 when the team is in that position, though, with them still learning about their new car and how to get the best out of it:

“I would say even between 2022 to 2023 I’m not expecting realistically a win or a couple of wins," Norris was quoted by Motorsport Week as saying.

“For me, my confidence is in 2024 and 2025, and until then I need to play a little bit of the patience game.

“There are still times where you could achieve a win, even with Daniel [Ricciardo] last year achieving a win, and me almost having pole in Austria, having pole in Russia, almost winning Russia – those things can come along the way.

“Even when [Esteban] Ocon wins and [Pierre] Gasly wins, those moments can come, but until genuinely being in a position where I can say: ‘There are no more excuses and we want to win genuinely rather than with a bit of luck because certain things happen,’ that time is in 2024 and 2025."
