F1: Jamie Chadwick compares W Series win to 'anti-climax' Verstappen title

Jamie Chadwick feels that her W Series title win was even more of an anti-climax than the way Max Verstappen realised he had won his second Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

The British driver became a three-time champion this week following the unfortunate news of the 2022 W Series season being cut short.

Due to financial difficulties, the Championship made the decision to curtail the season in order to protect the longevity of the business.

Chadwick remains the only woman to ever win the W Series title, making it an astonishing three out of three with this year’s triumph.

The 24-year-old won five consecutive races this season, including the British Grand Prix.

She had the opportunity to wrap up the title in Singapore at the start of the month, but a never-before-seen DNF from the champion forced her to retire and kept the title race relatively open.

With five wins and a P2 finish out of seven races, it looked inevitable that Chadwick would once again be crowned champion, but she did not expect to win her third title in this manner.

She compared it to Verstappen’s strange winning circumstances in Japan but believes her situation was even more underwhelming.

“I was watching it [Verstappen finding out he’d won] thinking, ‘oh, that’s a bit of an anti-climax’, and then I feel like this is probably even more so.

“I guess down the line I won’t even remember thinking about it like this but at the same time, you always want to have the best opportunity to win it on track and it’s just one of those things, it’s mixed emotions.

“I wasn’t hoping to be sat at home when finding out I’d won a Championship rather than maybe on track, but it’s how it falls this time.”
