'Extraordinary' and 'one of a kind' husband and mountain rescue volunteer loses cancer battle

A much loved mountain rescue team volunteer has lost their battle with cancer. Mark Slocombe has been described as 'adventurous, creative, extraordinary' by family and 'truly one of a kind' after tragically losing his short battle with cancer on March 26.

Mark, from Ramsbottom, volunteered with Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team who also paid tribute to their team member online. His family set up a gofundme page for the mountain rescue team and Maggie's Centres saying that Mark passed away peacefully and fought strong and hard until the very end.

Mark used his blog to share his journey with cancer while also sharing his art and photography. The gofundme's for Mark have raised nearly £2,000 with his family paying tribute to him, saying: "Mark was an adventurous, creative, extraordinary individual, who was loved by so many.

"He had many skills and interests including scuba diving, photography, marathons, mountaineering, illustrating and overall enjoying the great outdoors and what it has to offer. He was good-hearted, exceptionally talented and truly one of a kind.

"On March 26th 2023, Mark passed away peacefully after his battle with cancer. He fought strong and hard until the very end and we all miss him dearly."

The Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team posted: "It’s with a very sad heart we announce the passing of a loved and well respected teammate Mark Slocombe. Mark was a happy, vigorous and infectious personality and all who knew him remember his love for travel, life and the outdoors as well as his commitment to Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team.
