Ex-West Brom striker reveals he was forced to train alone

The forward spent time on loan with the Baggies earlier this season from Norwich City.

The deal was supposed to last for the entire campaign, but was recalled in January after one goal in 20 appearances. 

Hugill has since joined Cardiff City for the remainder of the season and has already scored three times in only 11 games for the Welsh club.

Hugill has now confirmed that he was frozen out by former West Brom boss Valerien Ismael. 

The 29-year old was speaking on the official EFL Podcast about his time at the Hawthorns. 

“There were times at West Brom when things weren’t going my way,” said Hugil, via West Brom News. 

“I was getting left out the squad and training on my own and for me sometimes a little break away from football.

“I like proving people wrong. People expect you in those situations to just chuck your toys out the pram and not do what you’re told. 

“But when it’s asked of me in that way, I go to a different level. I work harder. I do extras. I go to the gym every day. I do go around with heavy weights.

“Some of the best times I trained at West Brom were when they were maybe making me train on my own and then getting me back in for a few sessions.”

Hugill’s time with West Brom came to a disappointing conclusion in January but he has since found a more comfortable home in Cardiff.

The forward has struggled to settle in recent seasons having hopped around the Championship.

Hugill played a small role in helping Norwich bounce back into the Premier League last season, scoring four goals in 31 appearances.

Without Hugill, West Brom have slipped to 12th in the Championship under new boss Steve Bruce.

It is remarkable that this is the first time that it has come about Hugill training alone.
