Ex-Rangers and Spurs star says Ibrox kid is 'one for the future' but loan move is key

Alex Lowry has been hailed as ‘one for the future’ at Rangers, but urged to head out on loan this season.

Former Rangers and Spurs defender Alan Hutton believes Lowry has a real future at Ibrox, but will find it difficult to break into Michael Beale’s side this term.

And he reckons a temporary switch to England might prove that the 20-year-old from Uddingston has what it takes to be a real star.

Winger Lowry burst onto the scene last summer, moving up from the ‘B’ team, but a serious injury derailed his season and offers to take him on loan were rebuffed in January.

But Hutton reckons Rangers might be interested in getting regular football for Lowry, with Tranmere Rovers reportedly expressing an interest.

He told Football Insider: “I think you just have to wait and see and look at all your options.

“I think he is a very technical player, so he would have to go into a team that suits his abilities.

“I think that is the key – it doesn’t matter if it is England or Scotland.

“I think he is one for the future for Rangers, so they are always going to keep an eye on his progress.

“I think it will be difficult for him this year to break in.

“I do think he is a fantastic footballer, but I think it will take a bit of time before there is an opportunity for him to be a regular.

“Moving away and playing week in, week out, with a view to come back, is probably the best thing for him at the moment.

“Ultimately it has to be the right team for him.”
