Ex-player reveals different between Middlesbrough and Real Madrid fans

Former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias has suggested that the North East club’s fans are more passionate than the supporters of Spanish giants Real Madrid. 

The Spanish shot-stopper is a product of the Los Blancos academy but had multiple spells at Boro over a seven-year period between 2014 and 2021.

Mejias made 19 appearances in total for the Teessiders, including the famous EFL Cup win against Manchester United in October 2015.

With United set to host Boro this evening in the fourth round of the FA Cup, the 33-year-old reflected on that victory over the Red Devils and made a bold statement about the supporters.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “It was unbelievable. I can tell you a few things about this night.

“Sometimes when I turned my head at Old Trafford it looked like it was the Riverside because of all the fans that were travelling there and were close to us. It was unbelievable.

“Not too many things I can say to you that can describe this emotion because half the people there, with this passion, they’re going to be in my heart for the rest of my life.

“I was in a big club like Real Madrid but sometimes I didn’t feel this passion, not like Boro fans.”

Mejias revealed that he still keeps a keen eye on Boro’s results despite leaving the club last January.

He added: “They deserve all the best. Hopefully this season they can get promoted and beat Manchester United on Friday.”

Nearly 10,000 of the Championship club’s supporters are set to travel to Old Trafford this evening in support of Chris Wilder’s side.
