Ex-Hull City boss Grant McCann retains sliver of hope Peterborough might stay-up

Former Hull City boss Grant McCann has suggested his new side Peterborough United could survive relegation from the Championship due to Reading's financial troubles.

McCann was in charge at the MKM Stadium from June 2019 until January 2022, and masterminded the Tigers return to the Championship at the first time of asking following Hull's relegation a season prior.

He was replaced by City's new owners in January, with Shota Averladze taking over the reins from the ex-Northern Ireland international.

Prior to his dismissal, the Tigers were sitting in 19th place, 10 points clear of the relegation zone. He was not out of work for long however, joining Peterborough in February 2022 for third spell in charge of the Posh.

Peterborough finished the season in the relegation zone in 22nd place alongside Derby County and Barnsley. However, Reading, who finished four points and one place above McCann's side were docked six points in November, with a further six point deduction suspended should the Royals make any more breaches for financial irregularities.

Reading's latest accounts which were published in February showed they had pre-tax losses of £35.7m with the EFL only permitting a maximum loss of £39m across three seasons.

And speaking following his sides impressive 3-0 win over Blackpool on the final day of the season, McCann revealed there is a slender chance the Posh could stay up.

“There is something going on in the background with Reading which we are aware of, but it’s just a bit of hope more than anything," said McCann. "I don’t really want to go into it. You can never say never though.”
